20+ NEW ITEMS ADDED!

How often are changes in this list to be expected? Quite often, certainly:
• when a new issue comes out;
• when an earlier issue (postal history items for example) is being discovered;
• but above all when the author learns of a person/event "with a Jewish connection" (yes indeed, this kind of lists grow with the growing up of the author's knowledge on the matter; an example: I newly searched for information about the "ë" in Citroën just to discover the amazing story of Andre Citroën, son of Levie Citroen who changed his name from Citroen (Dutch for "lemon") to Citroën... Andre Citroën's name is not in Wikipedia's Jewish inventors list, even if he is remembered for his invention of double helical gears. An example how the list grows...
Dec 5th, 2008 Today for example I discovered a significant issue I missed when preparing this list - the 1947 set "Famous Bulgarian Theater Artists". A stamp shows Mrs.A.Budevska as DELILAH in a play featuring Biblical subjects - a realy interesting addition to this list. You can see this issue as No.2 here).

Other philatelic material. This list includes only the postage stamps of Bulgaria and the corresponding official FDCs. Bulgaria has issued a large number of postal stationery, covers as well as cards, which can add to the JUDAICA theme many interresting subjects - world chess players for example. This second list is in course of preparation and will be published here as soon as I am ready. So come back soon and check!

Feel free to e-mail me or leave a private message with your inquiry or question about this list and the topic!

NEW item added - check No.2 in this list!

C.Cvetkov, revised February 13th, 2009

This page lists ALL Bulgarian stamp issues, which are connected to the topic JUDAICA. By now their number is 37.

The list was made after a detailed study of the designs of all Bulgarian issues from 1879 to 2008. According to common practice I have listed all sets, especially issued to celebrate a Judaica personality or event, as well as sets including Judaica stamps (for example a "Paintings" set, which includes a stamp with a portrait of King David, will be in this list).

Principles. Which are my criteria for including an issue in this list? It should:
A. bear the picture of a Jewish personality or
B. show a work of art of a Jewish personality ( for example a building designed by Jewish architect or a painting by a Jewish artist; an airplane designed by a Jewish engineer would also be listed) or
C. show Jewish or Israeli symbols or of course
D. be issued especially to celebrate a Jewish personality or event;

Allthough I claim to be as accurate as possible, the completeness of this list could be contested. For example I have not listed several issued featuring: Tsar Ivan Shishman, son of Empress Sarah-Theodora (check No.19 in this list)[1]; Jesus Christ, John the Baptist, Paul the Apostle or any other person from the New Testament; Vladimir Ilich Lenin;

A bref search through JUDAICA lists available online finds Lenin in none of them, even if his Jewish connection is beyond any doubt (wikipedia).

Topical lists of the type Judaica (but also Bulgarica, Americana etc.) are not necesserily build on a completeness basis, more or less they emphasize on a special theme according to their authors' ideas or special interests (personalities, history, postal history etc.).

Due to the growing number of stamps issued wordwide this kind of limitations sound logical.

On the other hand the main topic can be significantly extended by including persons or events, which are indirectly connected to it. But as there aren't any general rules, as mentioned, every good clue should be appreciated.

I've chosen not to extend the topic to the maximum (thus I'm not including Martin Luther or Hadrian [2] for example nor am I listing Esperanto issues, which do not mention Dr. L.L.Zamenhof [3]).

Maybe it would be a good idea to list the catalogue numbers of issues, which do not match the criteria listed above, as there certainly are collectors who do not share my opinion. It will be done as soon as I can.

[1] An online source does list Tsar Ivan Shishman among Bulgarian Jews: indopedia.org/List_of_South-East_European_Jews. Here is another text on the subject - an interview with Prof. I.Ilchev, historian and Sofia University rector: interview.

[2] Martin Luther is being included in Judaica lists for his antisemitic writings; Roman emperor Hadrian allowed the Jews to return to Jerusalem but afterwards his policy has changed, which led to the Bar-Kokhba Revolt (see for example www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org on the matter). For me antisemitism could be regarded as a main topic itself, which is the reason why I do not include Martin Luther or similar issues in this Judaica list.

Bulgaria hasn't issued postage stamps featuring Hadrian, however the city of Odrin (or Adrianople), which got its name from emperor Hadrian, is a common theme in Bulgarian philately. But I'd rather chose not to include these issues in this list. Extending the topic this way is very close to overinterpretation. Imagine, you should for example list everything connected to Vespasian and Titus - like the Flavian Amphitheatre (or Colosseum) in Rome - or Trajan because of Rome's Jewish Wars of the I-II century.

My idea is of course not to ignore these historical events or personalities. A fair example of a Judaica stamp connected to Titus would be ITALY Michel#1015 of 1958, showing the Arch of Titus. This monument was errected after the Jewish War of 66-70 and bears the famous relief with the Temple menorah.

[3] Including every Esperanto issue in a Judaica list would be the same as listing every car, truck or ship just because of its diesel engine in a "Rudolf Diesel" or "XIXth century inventors" topical stamp list.
